A-Maths Test On Linear Law (Friday 14th July)

There would be an A-Math test on this Friday, on Linear Law.

I am not giving this this to make your life difficult.

Many of you didn't do well in the mid-year exams. If you really want to pass your final-exams, you need to be able to do Linear Law, as this usually is an important question, from 8 - 10 marks.

On Friday, I will give you three kind of graphs to sketch:

1.

For this type of graph, all you need to do is to identify the vertical and horizontal axes correctly(Y = mX + c), plot the graph and determine the gradient (a) and the vertical intercept(b).

2. For the second type of graph, you CANNOT plot the graph directly. You need to play around with the equation first, until you can arrange it in the form Y = mX + c

3.
For the third kind of graph, this is a logarithmic graph. You can only express it in the form of Y = mX + c after you "lg" or "ln" both sides of the equation.

For your test this friday, you will be required to plot these 3 types of graphs.

This is usually a heavyweight question in the exams. Also, it is a very straightforward kind of question. So, make sure you can do it.

1. Express given equation in the form Y = mX + c (2-3 marks)

2. Calculate the values for the X and Y vertical axes ( 2- 3 marks)

Find the values of 'b' ( usually from the vertical intercept) (1 mark)

Total: 8 - 10 marks

Amath Holiday Lessons

There would be holiday lessons for Amaths; both for 3F and 3I. The consent forms had been given out, and you are expected to turn up. We would be continuing on with the syllabus. This is not just for both my classes. The other Amaths teachers for 3E, 3G and 3H would be making arrangements for their own classes for holiday lessons.

3F: Monday & Tuesday (29th and 30th May 2006) 8 - 10am

3I: Wednesday & Thursday ( 31st May and 1st June 2006) 8 - 10am

Attendance is compulsory. You would only be excused if you have made vacation plans with your family, or you have a CCA camp.

Amaths Test - Term3 Week 1

There will be an Amaths test for you gals on Term 3 Week1. For your test, you will redo your Midyear Paper.

Here are the rules:

1. Anyone who scored 75% for their Midyear will be exempted from this test.

2a) Anyone who scores below 60% for this class test will be booked with a yellow form, and will have to re-do the test.

2b) Those who fail the test will have to sit for a re-test. (Meaning you will re-do your Midyear paper for the 3rd time.) Those who score below 65% will be booked with a yellow form, and will have to redo the paper yet again.

2c) If you keep failing, you will keep re-doing. Each time you redo, you will be expected to get 5% more.

1st try: 60% to pass

2nd try: 65 % to pass

3rd try: 70% to pass (and it goes on and on)

You gals have the entire June holiday to prepare. Even if your family have made holiday plans, or if you have CCA camps during the break, you still have around 2-3 weeks to prepare for this test.

Take this time to consult your classmates and friends who had done well in their Midyear.

Those of you with private tutors, get your tutors to go through the paper thoroughly with you.

Those of you without friends who did well, and without private tutors, can ask me to go through the paper with them. Most of your teachers are very likely to be in school during the first week and last week of the June break.

Study hard! Even if you have been weak in Maths all the while, I do not expect you to fail (below 60%). You got a month to prepare for this test.

You all are in my class. I am serious about making sure that all of you pass Math. Leave no woman behind.

3 Integrity...
The class tee can only be collected after the mid year exam.
The reason is:

- There are people who still refuses to pay the remaining $5.
And these people are Jaslyn, easwary and cynthia. so better pay up as soon as possible.
-Secondly, Qianyu is being grounded by her parents. So she can't go out to collect the class tee. Although i told her i will collect on her behalf but she said she and Ruoyu going there to scold the uncle. So yup.

Basically that's the only 2 problem we are facing now. It's a promise all of you will get your class tee after mid year exam ok?

And the problem as some of you might have heard it that there are money missing in the money collected. It's a misculculation. No money is missing so stop quarrelling among yourself ok?

Trying to do the job alone

Dear Sir:

I am writing in response to your request for additional information regarding my recent accident. In block number 3 of the accident report form, I put "trying to do the job alone" as the cause of my accident. In your letter you ask that I provide more detailed information, so I will explain the entire accident step-by-step.

I am a roofer by trade. On the date of the accident I was working alone on the roof of a 6 story building. When I completed my work I discovered that I had about 10 loads of bricks left over. Rather than carry them down by hand, I decided to lower them on a wheel-barrow by using a pulley which fortunately was attached to the side of the building at the 6th floor.

Securing the rope to my truck bumper, I went up to the roof, swung the wheel-barrow out, and loaded the bricks onto it. Then I went back to the ground and untied the rope, holding it tightly to insure a slow descent of the 720 pounds of bricks. You will note in block number 11 of the accident report form that my weight is 135 pounds.

Due to my surprise at being jerked off the ground so suddenly, I lost my presence of mind and forgot to let go of the rope. Needless to say , I proceeded up the side of the building at a rapid rate!

In the vicinity of the third floor I met the wheel-barrow coming down. This explains my fracture skull and broken collarbone.

Slowed only slightly, I continued on my rapid ascent, not stopping until the fingers on my right were two knuckles deep into the pulley. This explains my broken knuckles.

Fortunately, by this time I had regained my presence of mind and was able to hold tightly to the rope in spite of my pain.

At approximately the same time, however, the wheel-barrow of bricks struck the ground, spilling over. Devoid of the weight of the bricks, the wheel-barrow then weighed about 75 pounds. I again refer you to weight in block number 11. As you might image, I began a rapid descent down the side of the building.

In the vicinity of the third floor, I again met the wheel-barrow, only this time coming up. This explains my fractured ankle and lacerations of my leg and lower body.

On the bright side, striking the wheel-barrow that was coming up as I was coming down, did slow my descent enough to lessen my injuries when I landed on the pile of bricks. So fortunately I only cracked 3 vertebrae and bruised my buttocks.

I am sorry to report, however, that as I lay there on top of the bricks in intense pain and unable to stand up, that I let go of the rope. I lay there screaming as I watched the wheel-barrow descend down the side of the building landing on me. This explains my strained vocal cords and broken legs.

I hope this provides you with the information you required as to how the accident happened

Moral of the story:

I would like to leave you with a little humorous story that forms a good parable about the importance of working as a team and including various stakeholders from various environmental factors in working together and not trying to do the job alone.

The name of this story is: Doing the Job Alone. A bricklayer had recently been injured on the job and had filed an insurance claim. The insurance company wrote to request more information on the circumstances and to clarify the cause of his injuries.

But his wife's sickness continued, so friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock. To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig.
The farmer's wife did not get well, she died. So many people came for her funeral, the farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide enough meat for all of them.
The mouse looked upon it all from his crack in the wall with great sadness.
So, the next time you hear someone is facing a problem and think it doesn't concern you, remember --when one of us is threatened, we are all at risk.
We are all involved in this journey called life. We must keep an eye out for one another and make an extra effort to encourage one another.

This question is not that difficult. But if you are intimidated, the approach to solving such problems is to do it step-by-step.

Solving a difficult problem is like eating your dinner. YOU DO NOT EAT YOUR DINNER IN ONE MOUTHFUL. LIKEWISE, STOP TRYING TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM ENTIRELY IN YOUR MIND!!!!
JUST LIKE YOUR DINNER, YOU 'EAT' THE PROBLEM STEP-BY-STEP!!

Solution:
You are given that g(x) is a cubic equation, with factors (2x +1) and (x -1). Hence,

g(x) = (2x + 1) (x - 1) (?something?).

But the trouble is, what is this ?something?

What equation should we use with this ?something?

On the left-hand-side (LHS), g(x) is cubic. On the RHS, (2x + 1)( x -1) is quadratic. Therefore, to make the RHS cubic, ?something? must be a linear equation.

Now, let's look at the general formula:

Therefore, g(x) = ( 2x + 1) (x - 1) (Ax + B)

You are also given that g(x) has a remainder of 31x + 33 when divided by

Factorize it to get ( x -3) ( x + 1)

Use x = 3 and x = -1 in g(x)

When x = 3:

g(3) = (2 (3) + 1) ( 3 - 1) (3A + b)
= Remainder1

You are also told that Remainder1 = 31x + 33

Remainder1 = 31 (3) + 33 -------------------- (1)

When x = -1

g(-1) = Remainder2

Remainder2 = (2(-1) + 1) (-1 - 1)(-A + B) -------(2)

Once you got your two simultaneous equations, you should be able to solve for A and B.

A = 2, B = 3

Therefore, g(x) = (2x +1) (x -1) (2x + 3)

Some comments though....I observed that many of you were unable to solve Q2 (Simultaneous Equations) properly. You all had better buck up on that topic. It is almost like a giveaway question.

My sincere congratulations to those who passed, especially to Eswary and Phyllis!! Seriously speaking, I didn't expect the both of them to make it. But somehow, they miraculously pulled through. Even Nasreen and Denyse, who are weak in Maths, came pretty close to passing. An extra congratulations to the 4 of you!

People who are under-performing:
Kendra, Qian Yu and Chermaine (The 3 of you really need to buck up!),

Solution for a tough problem sum

A number of you have problems solving this question:

Part 1

Step 1: Write the f(x) expression. This step will always be your first step.

Since a - 3b is a factor, a = 3b. Therefore in Step 2:

Work this part out yourself and equate f(3b) = 0 (Since a - 3b is a factor. Factors have NO REMAINDERS!)

From there, solve for k. You should get k = -18.

Part 2

Rewrite the whole expression again, using k = -18.

This expression can be factorized. Notice that the powers for 'a' and 'b' are numbers that can be square-rooted. Do this part yourself. A good clue to start with is to ask yourself what are the factors of '18'.

From there, your final answer can be factorized one more time, using the (a + b) (a - b) principle.

Mock A-Maths Test

The silence from 3-Integrity was deafening. Every head was bowed, deeply engrossed in her own individual battle of wits. It was woman pitted against the goliaths of Simultaneous Equations and Remainder Theorem.

Even though it was an open-book test, most A-Maths textbooks remained firmly shut. Only a few decided to grasp at straws, to forgo honour just to pass the test. Another lesson was swiftly learnt as they realized that during a Math test, a Math text book is of little use. The knowledge has to be in the brain, the skill has to be in her hand as numbers and formulas flow from her pen, instead of being stuck in textbooks and past homework.

The hour dragged. And with each passing second, the slow realization of the great 'F' looming before her knocked the wind out of her sails. For a few 3-Integritians, defeat was inevitable even before half the questions had been attempted. Most 3-Integritians marched to their defeat, ready to accept their failure. Pens were thrown down in frustration when the hour was finally up.

"This test may not be considered if 3-Integrity can give me a good cheer. But as long as one person does not cheer, this paper will be considered as a test."

All along, death was in their eyes. Now, for a moment, a ray of hope sparkled from their eyes.
'If only everyone would cheer, including those who are usually more reserved...."

Everybody's CA grade was at stake here. After some apprehension and hesitation, mouths began to open. For the first time, making noise could actually be the antidote against academic destruction...

"I-N-T-E-G-R-I....." the resounding cheer started.

Next week Friday, Destruction will show her face in 3-Integrity's direction again. But for today, 3-Integrity lives.

Dear girls, next week Friday, you won't be so lucky. This time, the test WILL be counted. I hope after today, you have a clearer idea of where you currently stand in your A-Maths skills. There is still hope.

A few of you did quite well in the test. I observed during my rounds that a number of you were able to hold her own against the heavy onslaught. I think there are about 7-8 of you girls. If you survived today, it is very likely that you will do well in the CT 2 in the following week.

For those who did not do well today, don't be disappointed. Be glad that you had early warning on your current strength in A-Maths. You still have time to redeem yourselves.

I think we need to plot strategy to enable as many of our 3-Integritians to pass the Common Test 2. It is going to be a 1-hour long paper, and unlike your other 10-mins class tests, NO hints will be dropped on which questions are coming out.

The topics for your CT 2 would be on Chapter 2 and 5; Simultaneous Equations & everything in the Remainder and Factor Theorem topic.

My plan is simple: For the next two Fridays, we will spend 1 full-hour doing a Mock CT 2 paper. This way, you would be able to gauge whether you can pass or even score in the actual CT.
I will give you two mock CT 2 papers over the next two Fridays. After each paper, we will go through the solutions on Monday in the following week.

Let's all aim for 100% pass for our 3-Integrity!! Time to show the other Secondary 3 classes that our 3-Integrity is NOT INFERIOR to them!!!

Here are the results of class test 2 at group-level. A bit disappointing that 12 people can fail the test, despite the obvious hints and that you were given the entire weekend to go and prepare the questions for that 1-Question, 10 minute test (4 marks).

Today's A-Math's test was really really jialat!!!

I will upload the entire class's results tomorrow. 12 people failed and have to meet up with me on this coming Wednesday, either during the E-Math remedial, or after the remedial for a re-test.

How come people can still make careless mistakes, or have trouble doing the test, despite me dropping very obvious hints on the question that would come out? You had the entire weekend to prepare the 3 possible test questions!!! And some of you who failed actually have private tuition.

I only gave the test after u gals had done many practices and homework on this topic: remainder theorem and Identities.

How come ppl can still fail? Do you understand the homework that you did? Was the lesson too fast? Lack of practice? Didn't prepare for the test? Or not enough time?

Muster Parade Photos

Today, we had a Muster-Parade for St. John's Ambulance Brigade and National Police Cadet Corps. I wanted to upload the photos that I took to share with all the 3-Integritians, to let you gals see how brave and pretty our Chiobu No.1, No.2 and No.4 are. And also not forgetting Kendra from SJAB. Also quite chio. Ha ha ha!

But pity your Chiobus are all so photo-shy. They don't wish to see the photos uploaded. So, in a compromise, I upload some other photos to give you an idea how chio and brave they are. They must be lah....3 years of hard training in a military organization!

Today's Lesson Very Jialat!!

I was rather annoyed by today's lesson. Well, on hindsight, I felt that I learnt more about you gals today during our A-Maths lesson.

After marking your daily assignments and homework, I was under the impression that most of you are able to solve the Remainder Theorem problems competently. On your own. But after today's practice with the 4 questions (Ex. 5. 1 Q 10 & 12, Ex5.2 Q8 &9), I now realized how weak some of you gals really are.

How are you are able to do the homework correctly all the time? But when asked to solve similar problems on the spot, a number of you stumble around like amateurs?

I need to ask you gals:

1. How exactly do you go about doing your daily homework and assignment?

2. Is somebody else doing the assignment for you?

As in, your father, or brother or tutor or even I, am doing the homework for you? You listen to the solution, COPY the solution and then say to yourself, "I did the question. I now know what is going on!"

Oi!! Do you gals understand why I usually rub away the solution on the board after I explained it?

It is because I want you gals to SOLVE THE PROBLEM yourself!! If you just copy and read the answer, you won't master the problem!!

For Maths, you DO NOT master the problem until you solve the problem ON YOUR OWN!!!

Next time, please make sure you solve the problems yourself. Even if you get your tutor or me or your brother to help you, make sure you ultimately solve the problem yourself, instead of just copying their solutions.

A-Maths Test!!

One of your 3-Integritians had the gall to hint that I am very old, like an ah-pek. For that one person's offence, all 40 of the 3-Integritians will be punished.

You will have your 2nd A-Maths test on 6th February 2006 (Monday). The topic that you will be tested on will be on Remainder Theorem.

My House-Rules For Class Test:

1. You will be given one exam-standard question. (4-marks )

2. You have ten minutes to solve it.

3. You will either get FULL-MARKS or ZERO!!! No method marks will be awarded. I want you gals to focus hard on being able to turn in ACCURATE work.

4. Anyone who fails will have to take a re-test with me on Wednesday, during or after the Math Remedial. If you pass the make-up test, I will moderate your ZERO to 2 marks.

Tiring Thursday

Today's play was marvellous!! A big thanks to all choir members (Esther, Sylvia, Daphne, Jiayi, Xueyi and Charlotte) and ushers (RuoYu and QianYu).

I was there tonight, and was pretty glad to see a number of our own 3 Integritians who showed up either yesterday or tonight, or even both nights to give support!! Our supporters from 3 Integrity also deserve a big THANK YOU!!!

Jiayi, Rachel, Shina and Lisa are to see me in our homeroom on Wednesday, right after the Math remedial. The four of you will sit for a make-up test. If you have trouble doing it, then we will will have a remedial session for you on the spot.

Common Mistakes Made During Algebra Test

Many of you made serious mistakes regarding some basic rules of Maths. Please stop making this mistake!!!

I want this problem of 'wrong cancellation' addressed and stopped permanently!!!!

Most of you are familiar with the following:

6y = 6y = y
6____6

Abuse of the 'Cancellations'

During the test, many of you have abused and misused this 'cancellation' technique.

Do you do this kind of Maths? Check and see if the following is correct:

5 + 3 = 5 + 3= 1 + 3 = 4
_5______5______1

Do the sum the long way: (5+3)/5 = 8/5

Is 8/5 = 4 ????

Now, look at the use of algebra. This is what some of you did during the algebra test.

Eg:
x + 5 = x + 5 = 1 + 5 = 6
_x_______x_____1

Can you stop making this kind of very serious mistake in the future??

I am not sure of what is the cut-off points for those who are exempted from the A-Maths remedial.

To those who are disappointed with their results, I am glad that you feel disappointed. That means that you CARE about how well you do!!! As long as you care about your results, you have hope!!!!
